Switzerland turns into a security barracks in preparation for the signing of the Washington-Tehran agreement in Bürgenstock

Bürgenstock –The Swiss authorities announced the deployment of about two thousand soldiers and the temporary closure of airspace over the Bürgenstock area, as part of tight security arrangements in preparation for the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran scheduled for next Friday, amid widespread international interest in the agreement that ended months of confrontations between the two sides.

These measures come after Washington and Tehran announced that they had reached a preliminary agreement to stop the war that has been going on for months, during which the ceasefire would be extended and a path of nuclear negotiations would be opened, which prompted Bern to adopt an exceptional security plan to secure the event in which high-level officials from the two countries and other countries are expected to participate.

According to the Swiss government, the army will be tasked with supporting the Nidwald District Police through tasks that include facility protection, surveillance, transportation, and logistics services, while the airspace closure extends from June 18 to 20 over a circle with a diameter of about 46 kilometers around the meeting site, with air surveillance strengthened during the event period.

It is also expected that representatives of countries including Qatar and Pakistan will attend the signing ceremony, at a time when the Bürgenstock resort, overlooking Lake Lucerne in the Alps, is witnessing intense preparations to receive this sensitive political event that comes after months of complex negotiations and previous military confrontations.

The selection of Bürgenstock as a signing site is seen as a step of political and security significance, given its isolated mountainous location, advanced equipment, and record of hosting sensitive international meetings, in addition to Switzerland’s traditional role as a neutral mediator in international disputes.
