Last Wednesday, the security authorities in eastern Libya announced the discovery of a mass grave in the northeast of the country containing the bodies of 21 irregular migrants of various African nationalities, according to what local media reported, citing a government source.
According to circulating data, the Internal Security Service in the city of Ajdabiya uncovered the cemetery following field investigations that led to the arrest of a Libyan suspect, described as having a criminal record. He was arrested during a raid on a farm suspected of being used as a place to detain migrants in inhumane conditions.
The same sources reported that a number of the migrants who were found inside this farm were in critical health conditions, and were quickly transferred to the hospital to receive the necessary treatment, before providing information that enabled the authorities to determine the location of the mass grave, where the specialized teams began the process of recovering the bodies.
Local media and social media platforms circulated pictures and video clips documenting the recovery process, but the authenticity of these materials could not be independently verified, as official investigations continue to uncover the circumstances of the case and identify all possible participants.
Libya is considered one of the most prominent crossing and departure points for migrants, especially those coming from sub-Saharan African countries, due to its geographical location close to the European coasts, as it is only about 300 kilometers separated from Italy, making it a major station in irregular migration routes across the Mediterranean Sea.
This incident brings to the fore the fragility of the security and humanitarian situation in the country since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, which resulted in a state of political division and security chaos, which was exploited by human trafficking networks, according to reports issued by the United Nations and international non-governmental organizations, which documented on several occasions serious violations against migrants, including forced detention, extortion, and exploitation.
