Shock in Tunisia.. 4 years imprisonment for prominent leaders from Ennahdha in the case of Daboussi’s death

Tunisia – Today, Wednesday, the Tunisian Court of First Instance issued a ruling imprisoning the leaders of the Ennahdha movement, Noureddine El-Behairi andMunther Al-WanisiFor a period of four years each, against the backdrop of the case related to the death of the late parliamentarian and businessman Al-Jilani Al-Dabousi.

The court also imposed a two-year suspended prison sentence against a former doctor and a former public prosecutor, while it decided to acquit former Minister of Health Abdul Latif Al-Makki of the charges against him in the same file.

The facts of the case date back to May 7, 2014, when Al-Dabousi died hours after his release from prison, where he was detained in corruption-related cases. His death at the time sparked widespread controversy, especially after accusations from his family of violations during his detention.

The Public Prosecution had opened an investigation in January 2022 regarding suspicions related to attempted premeditated murder, ill-treatment, and refraining from completing legal work, before the judicial procedure developed into referring the accused to the judiciary.

The ruling issued is considered preliminary and is subject to appeal according to the applicable levels of litigation. The defendants had denied in previous statements any connection to Al-Dabousi’s death, stressing their insistence on their innocence.

It should be noted that at the time of Daboussi’s death, Nour El-Din El-Beheiry was serving as Minister of Justice, while Abdul-Latif El-Makki was Minister of Health.
