Nouakchott.. Thirst and garbage exacerbate the suffering of the residents of the Hayat Jadidah neighborhood amid demands for urgent intervention

Nouakchott: Residents of the “New Life” neighborhood of Toujnin District, on the outskirts of the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, face difficult living conditions due to what they describe as the deterioration of a number of basic services, most notably the provision of potable water, electricity, and hygiene services.

According to identical testimonies reported by local media, residents suffer from frequent water outages that may extend for days, and sometimes weeks, which forces many families to rely on mobile tanks or limited distribution points to meet their daily needs.

A number of residents confirmed that the water crisis is worsening with the rise in temperatures, while they complain about the continued collection of consumption bills despite repeated outages and poor supply.

Local testimonies also spoke of difficulties associated with supplying electricity in parts of the neighborhood, as some homes remain outside the scope of regular access to the network, amid fears of the dangers of random connections and their impact on the safety of residents.

On the other hand, residents complain about the accumulation of waste near residential neighborhoods, the accompanying spread of unpleasant odors and the deterioration of environmental conditions, in light of demands to enhance regular collection and transportation of garbage.

A number of neighborhood residents pointed out that the challenges are not limited to water, electricity, and hygiene, but also include limited transportation and health services, and the distance of basic facilities from residential communities, which increases the difficulty of daily life in the area.

In this context, local activists and residents of the neighborhood called on the relevant authorities to intervene to improve basic services and enhance infrastructure, ensuring better living conditions for residents and responding to the growing needs of the region.

Residents of “New Life” hope that their area will receive priority in future development programs, in order to address constraints related to water, electricity, hygiene, and public services.
