Algeria –The circulation of a document attributed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal sparked widespread controversy, after Algerian media and pages promoted it as a final ruling ruling that the Senegalese team would be crowned champion, despite the fact that no official decision was issued by the court in this file.
A review of the data published by the Court of Arbitration for Sport showed that the judicial body has not, up to now, issued any final ruling regarding the appeal related to the decision of the Confederation of African Football, which refutes the authenticity of the document circulated and raises questions about its source.
This incident comes after Algerian state television, during its coverage of one of the matches, broadcast news attributed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) in which it claimed to have settled the appeal submitted by the Senegalese Federation and awarded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title to Senegal, based on a circulated document that later turned out to be unofficial. However, the clip later disappeared from various official Algerian television platforms without any explanation or apology, at a time when the court had not issued any decision regarding the file, which observers considered to be the promotion of undocumented information about a case that is still before the international sports judiciary.
A number of observers believe that this incident falls within a series of misleading news and content that is circulated whenever the name of Morocco is associated with major sporting merits or continental and international achievements, before it finds its way to social media platforms without relying on official sources.
The origin of the file goes back to the decision of the Appeals Committee of the Confederation of African Football, which considered the Senegalese team defeated by three goals to nothing, after withdrawing from the final match, a decision that the Senegalese Federation appealed before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, awaiting the final ruling.
In the same context, a number of legal experts in the field of sports disputes have previously confirmed that the chances of changing the CAF decision appear limited in light of the clarity of the regulations governing cases of withdrawal, stressing that simply submitting an appeal does not stop the implementation of the decision, which means that the Moroccan national team will continue to be certified as champion of the competition until a final judicial ruling is issued.
