Mauritania denies the infiltration of armed men from Mali and describes the circulating data as “misleading”

Nouakchott –The Mauritanian army denied the validity of the information circulated regarding the crossing of armed men from Mali into Mauritanian territory, stressing that the information circulated in this regard was “inaccurate and misleading.”

This clarification came after a statement issued by the “African Corps” of the Russian Ministry of Defense, in which it spoke about the killing of dozens of militants inside a camp in Mali, noting that some fighters fled towards the Mauritanian border after the military operation.

In an official response, the General Staff of the Mauritanian Armed Forces confirmed that the allegations regarding the crossing of armed elements into the national territory are baseless, considering that such news falls within “attempts to mislead and spread confusion.”

The statement added that the Mauritanian Armed Forces continue to perform their tasks in securing the borders and monitoring the security situation, while maintaining readiness to confront various challenges related to the regional situation in the Sahel region.

In a related context, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune revealed the existence of indirect contacts between Algeria and Mali regarding finding a way out of the existing crisis, in light of the continuing security and political tensions in the region.

In recent years, the Sahel region has witnessed an escalation in security challenges related to the activity of armed groups, which has prompted a number of countries in the region to strengthen monitoring and security coordination procedures at the borders.
