The United Nations Support Mission in Libya warned of the rise in hate speech and misinformation that fuels tensions against refugees and migrants, amid growing popular tensions and calls to expel irregular migrants.
The mission stressed, in a statement on Thursday, that misleading information contributes to spreading fear and hostility, calling for public discourse to adhere to facts and respect for human rights.
For its part, the Libyan National Unity Government renewed its categorical rejection of the resettlement of migrants, as Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dabaiba stressed that “Libya will not be a home for irregular migration” and will not be subject to any pressure or bargaining in this file.
The government held an expanded meeting to discuss strict security measures, including enhancing security of the southern borders, tightening control at city entrances, and deporting migrants in coordination with source countries.
It is noteworthy that Libya is a major transit point towards Europe, at a time when it complains about the absence of European support to confront migration flows.
