The Libyan security authorities announced the detention of a number of Tunisian cars and referred their owners to the Public Prosecution on charges of illegally smuggling goods and fuel across the Libyan border. This campaign appears to come as a response to the detention of a Libyan citizen in Tunisia on charges of smuggling subsidized materials.
In a statement issued by the Law Enforcement Department of the General Department of Security Operations of the Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Unity, it stated that security patrols were able to seize a number of Tunisian vehicles inside the Ras Jdir land port, where their owners were practicing smuggling goods and merchandise, in addition to smuggling fuel using additional illegal tanks for these vehicles. The necessary legal measures were taken against them, and they were referred to Ras Ijdir Police Station in preparation for presenting them to the Public Prosecution.
These security measures come after the controversy raised by the imprisonment of Libyan citizen Wassim Shakma in Tunisia on charges of smuggling subsidized foodstuffs. This issue ignited a wave of anger in Libya, where many citizens demanded the application of the principle of “reciprocity” with the Tunisian side. The campaign also escalated on Libyan social media sites, demanding that the authorities take similar measures against Tunisians involved in smuggling goods within Libyan territory.
Smuggling issues between Libya and Tunisia are thorny topics, as some border areas in the two countries depend on informal commercial activities as their main source of livelihood, making any tight security measures controversial.
