This week, the Libyan authorities announced the postponement of the reopening of the main Ras Jedir border crossing with Tunisia, which was scheduled to reopen tomorrow, Thursday, until next June 24.
The Libyan Ministry of Interior explained that the postponement came to complete some procedures for opening the crossing, stressing that it will remain open for humanitarian, emergency, medical and diplomatic cases.
It is noteworthy that Libya and Tunisia recently signed a security agreement stipulating the opening of all common gates at the Ras Jedir crossing, strengthening surveillance there, and preventing the presence of any armed manifestations.
The Ras Jedir crossing was closed at the end of last March, following an attack carried out by “outlaw groups” in order to cause chaos.
The Ras Jedir crossing, located in northwestern Libya and about 170 kilometers west of Tripoli, is the main crossing point between western Libya and southeastern Tunisia, as the region is home to cross-border commercial activities, including smuggling.
Postponing the reopening of the Ras Jedir crossing will lead to more suffering for the local population in both Libya and Tunisia, which will hinder trade and movement between the two countries.
A number of those following local affairs are looking forward to reopening the Ras Jedir crossing as soon as possible, to stimulate trade and economic activity between the two brotherly countries, and to enhance joint cooperation at various levels.
