TripoliThe Libyan authorities expanded their precautionary measures to confront the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, after several municipalities in the east, west and south of the country announced the closure of livestock markets and imposed restrictions on the transport of animals, in an attempt to limit the spread of the disease that threatens the livestock sector.
The measures included closing livestock markets in the cities of Tarhuna, Sirte, Qasr al-Akhiar, Suluq, Qaminis, Tobruk, Shahat, and Derna, in addition to Awjala and Ubari, after recording injuries and deaths in a number of herds, with the formation of veterinary teams for epidemiological investigation and monitoring the field situation.
According to official data, the head of the Animal Health Center, Muhammad Al-Oqab, announced the registration of more than3765 infectionsFoot-and-mouth disease, in addition to the death of233 heads of sheep and 44 heads of cows, as well as the presence of more than62 thousand heads of mixed animalsWhile infections were concentrated in Benghazi, Al-Marj, and the Jabal Al-Akhdar region.
Veterinary officials confirmed that efforts to contain the disease face challenges related to the lack of capabilities and the delay in providing appropriate vaccines, noting that identifying the circulating viral strain is an essential step before launching vaccination campaigns.
Specialists also warned of the economic repercussions of the disease, which may lead to a decrease in milk production, an increase in the death of young livestock, and an increase in the prices of meat and milk, which will affect the living conditions of citizens.
Investigations and sampling operations are continuing in various regions, while the authorities call on breeders to adhere to preventive measures and immediately report any suspected cases to limit the spread of the disease.
