A meeting between an undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense in the Libyan National Unity Government and Saddam Haftar sparked mixed reactions, amid condemnation expressed by the Supreme Council of Elders and Notables of Libya, which considered the move controversial in the current Libyan context.
According to a statement by the Council, he expressed his surprise at this meeting, noting that such steps raise special sensitivity given the context related to the events that took place in the capital, Tripoli, in 2019, and the humanitarian and social repercussions they had.
In the same statement, the Council renewed its position calling for the need to take into account the file of the victims and their families, stressing that any future path or understandings should be based on clear foundations of justice and fairness, while ensuring that issues related to accountability and reparation are not overlooked.
He also stressed the importance of involving various social and national actors, especially representatives of the victims’ families, in any initiatives related to reconciliation or rapprochement, in a way that enhances trust and ensures the comprehensiveness of the solutions proposed.
In the same context, the Council called for adopting an approach based on the principles of transitional justice, ensuring that the outstanding issues are addressed in a way that achieves a balance between the requirements of reconciliation and respect for the rights of those affected.
These developments come in light of the continuing efforts aimed at achieving stability in Libya, as the path of national reconciliation remains one of the most prominent challenges before various actors at the current stage.
