The funeral ceremony began with the transfer of the body from Bani Walid Hospital, before crowds flocked from a number of Libyan cities to the vicinity of the city’s airport, where the funeral prayer was held, in light of security arrangements imposed by the local authorities in anticipation of any emergency.
Participants in the funeral chanted slogans that expressed nostalgia for the era of the rule of the late ColonelMuammar GaddafiIn addition to expressions calling for preserving Libya’s unity and rejecting regional and regional division, according to clips circulating on social media platforms.
The Bani Walid Directorate had announced earlier that attendance at the funeral ceremony would be limited to members of the deceased’s family, in addition to a limited number of notables from the Warfalla and Al-Qadhadhfa tribes, but other numbers of mourners attended the vicinity of the funeral site.
This funeral comes after the killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, last Tuesday, in a shooting incident described as mysterious in the city of Zintan, southwest of Tripoli. The political team close to him reported that masked gunmen stormed his residence and deliberately disabled the surveillance cameras, before a clash took place that led to his death.
The incident sparked mixed official reactions, as a number of Libyan officials condemned the assassination, including the President of the Presidential CouncilMuhammad Al-ManfiWhile the former President of the Supreme Council of StateKhaled Al-MishriThe absence of Saif al-Islam from the political scene may serve other actors in the country.
It is noteworthy that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi remained, for years, a controversial figure in the Libyan scene, as he lived since his release in 2016 in the city of Zintan under heavy guard, and an arrest warrant had previously been issued against him byInternational Criminal Court, in addition to judicial rulings inside Libya, before his name returned to the forefront by announcing his candidacy for the presidential elections in 2021, which were later cancelled.
With his death, a political chapter that has been present in the Libyan public debate over the last decade is closed, amid continued division and differing visions about the country’s future and its political path.
