Tunisia –Tunisia’s economy recorded new recovery indicators during the first quarter of 2026, after achieving growth of 2.6 percent compared to the same period last year, according to official data issued by the National Institute of Statistics.
This performance was supported by an improvement in a number of vital sectors, led by agriculture, services and industry, at a time when the Tunisian economy continues to face challenges related to the slowdown, investment and financial pressures.
Despite the recorded annual improvement, official data showed a decline in gross domestic product by 0.3 percent compared to the last quarter of 2025, which reflects the continuation of some economic pressures on domestic activity.
The agricultural sector led economic growth during the beginning of the year, after the added value of agricultural activities increased by 6.8 percent, contributing more than half a percentage point to the total growth achieved.
The laboratory industries also recorded a positive performance with a growth of 3.1 percent, driven by a strong increase in the food and agricultural industries by 15.1 percent, in addition to an improvement in the mechanical and electrical industries by 4.3 percent.
On the other hand, the textile, clothing and footwear sector continued to record a noticeable decline of 5.8 percent, amid challenges related to production and foreign markets.
At the energy and mining sector level, activity recorded a growth of 0.9 percent, supported by an increase in mining activity by 3.7 percent, while oil and natural gas activities declined by 4.8 percent.
The services sector also achieved a growth of 2.2 percent, benefiting from the improvement in the performance of hotels, restaurants and cafes by 4 percent, in addition to the growth of the information and communications technology sector by 4.1 percent, and the transportation sector by 1.7 percent.
On the other hand, the construction sector continued to record negative performance, after declining by 7.1 percent during the same period.
Observers believe that improved economic growth indicators may give a new impetus to the Tunisian economy in the coming months, especially if the productive and service sectors continue to maintain their upward trend.
