The head of the Ennahda movement and the head of the dissolved Tunisian parliament, Rached Ghannouchi, sent a message from his prison in Mornaguia to his party’s supporters, in which he stressed that the path that Tunisia should take is based on freedom and the consolidation of the state of law and institutions, while emphasizing the peaceful transfer of power as an option that has no alternative “even if it takes a long time.”
In his message, Ghannouchi considered that the stability of countries is achieved by respecting the will of citizens and guaranteeing rights, not through exclusion or restrictions, calling for adherence to the values of justice and pluralism. He also stressed that democracy represents a mechanism for organizing differences peacefully and protecting public dignity.
He addressed the movement’s base, calling on them to stick to the principles, stressing that political projects transcend individuals, and that ideas remain even if circumstances change.
This comes in an ongoing judicial context since Ghannouchi’s arrest in April 2023, against the backdrop of issues related to state security. The Tunisian Court of Appeal had ruled in early February to raise the sentence imposed on him in what is known in the media as the “Conspiracy against State Security 2” file to 20 years in prison, after the initial ruling had set it at 14 years.
The case dates back to September 2023, when investigations were launched that included a number of names, before the circle of followers expanded. During 2025, other rulings were issued in a separate file known as “Conspiracy against State Security 1,” including dozens of defendants with varying sentences.
The Tunisian authorities confirm that the prosecutions are of a purely criminal nature, and deny the presence of those detained for political reasons, while opposition parties consider that these cases fall within a tense internal political context.
The letter reflects the continuing debate over the future of political life in Tunisia, between an official narrative that stresses the application of the law, and opposition positions calling for a return to a pluralistic democratic path.
