France reopens the page on judicial cooperation with Algeria… and the file of the detained journalist is at the forefront of Darmanin’s visit to Algeria

Algeria –French Minister of Justice Gerald Darmanin intends to go, on Monday, to Algeria at the head of a high-level judicial delegation, on a visit aimed at discussing ways to enhance judicial cooperation between Paris and Algeria, in addition to discussing a number of sensitive files, most notably the case of the French journalist detained in Algeria, Christophe Glez.

The French Ministry of Justice stated that this visit aims to “open a new chapter of judicial cooperation” between the two countries, noting that the discussions will include files related to organized crime, drug trafficking, and combating terrorism.

Darmanin is expected to meet his Algerian counterpart, Lotfi Boudjemaa, as part of ongoing efforts to restore warmth to relations between Paris and Algeria after a diplomatic crisis that lasted nearly two years.

The French authorities confirmed that the case of the French journalist detained in Algeria will be a “priority” during this visit, as Glez is serving a seven-year prison sentence on charges related to “praising terrorism,” after he was arrested in 2024 while preparing a press report in the Kabylie region in northeastern Algeria.

The French Minister of Justice is accompanied by a judicial delegation that includes prominent officials in the French judiciary, including the national prosecutor specialized in combating organized crime, Vanessa Perry, and the financial prosecutor, Pascal Brach.

Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his hope that the recent official visits between officials of the two countries would constitute the beginning of the return of bilateral relations to their normal course, criticizing what he described as “domestic political positions” that had harmed relations between the two countries during the past months.
