DohaToday, Tuesday, Qatar confirmed the continuation of diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran, announcing the presence of American envoys Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Doha to hold meetings with mediators and follow up on the implementation of the memorandum of understanding between the two sides, in conjunction with its assertion that ensuring the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is a top priority.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman, Majid Al-Ansari, said during a press conference that the technical meetings between Washington and Tehran have not stopped, and that the mediators are continuing to work to facilitate negotiations, explaining that the current stage focuses on restoring regional security and stability to what they were before the outbreak of war.
Al-Ansari added that Doha used a direct line of communication dedicated to reducing the escalation in the Strait of Hormuz to contain the recent tensions, stressing that freedom of navigation in the strait is a right guaranteed to all Gulf states, and that Qatar rejects any attempts to close it or threaten the safety of maritime traffic.
Regarding the frozen Iranian funds, the Qatari official explained that the amount of six billion dollars has not been transferred to Iran yet, indicating that this issue will be resolved according to what will be agreed upon between Washington and Tehran, and that it is directly related to the progress of the negotiations.
Al-Ansari also revealed Qatari coordination with the Sultanate of Oman regarding securing maritime transit in the Strait of Hormuz, appreciating at the same time French participation in mine clearance operations from the shipping lane.
These statements come after the White House announced that American envoys would head to Doha to hold high-level talks, while US President Donald Trump described this tour as potentially “important” in the course of the ongoing understandings with Iran.
On the other hand, Tehran stressed the need for the United States to adhere to the terms of the memorandum of understanding, warning that any breach of the agreement would negatively affect the course of the negotiations.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said that any American action will not go unanswered, stressing that Iranian forces will deal firmly with any attack, while denying that there are plans to hold direct meetings with American officials in the coming days.
Baghaei indicated that Iran will discuss with the Qatari side the issue of frozen Iranian funds, reiterating that Tehran considers itself responsible for the security of the Strait of Hormuz, and rejects any external interference in the management of this sea corridor.
Qatar continues to play the role of the main mediator in bringing views closer between Washington and Tehran, after its contribution to reaching the recent memorandum of understanding that ended the military confrontation between the two parties, amid international anticipation of the results of the new round of talks and their repercussions on navigation security and global energy markets.
