Desertification is exhausting Mauritania despite decades of control programs (video)

Nouakchott – February 16, 2026

Mauritania faces increasing environmental challenges due to the expansion of desertification and the repercussions of climate change, in light of official data indicating that about 80 percent of the country’s area is located within the desert area, which places growing pressure on natural resources and related economic activities.

Despite the launch of successive government programs since the 1960s to reduce sand encroachment and protect oases and pastoral areas, the phenomenon still represents one of the most prominent development constraints, especially with the successive years of drought and the decline of vegetation in a number of inland areas.

The authorities are working to implement afforestation projects, stabilize sand dunes, and preserve vegetation, as part of approaches aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and enhancing the resilience of the local population. However, the expansion of the desert area and the weakness of logistical and financial capabilities impose additional challenges on confrontation efforts.

Environmental observers believe that effectively confronting this phenomenon requires adopting more effective policies based on long-term planning, valuing natural resources, and strengthening regional and international cooperation, especially in light of the cross-border nature of the phenomenon of desertification in the Sahel region.

The issue of combating desertification in Mauritania remains part of broader challenges related to food security, social stability and sustainable development, in a regional context that is in turn affected by accelerating climate fluctuations.
