Relations between Algeria andFranceA new indication of an attempt to ease diplomatic tension, following a phone call between French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Attaf.
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the two sides discussed during this call ways to resume bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of security and immigration, while emphasizing the importance of continuing political dialogue between the two countries in light of the current regional and international challenges.
This communication is the first official contact between the two ministers since their meeting last November on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, while the last official visit of the French Foreign Minister to Algeria dates back to April 2025, before the escalation of tension between the two countries.
During the conversation, the French Minister expressed his hope that these contacts would lead to tangible results that serve the interests of both countries. He also touched on the file of French journalist Christophe Glez, who is serving a prison sentence in Algeria on charges of “glorifying terrorism.”
This step comes in the context of efforts to revitalize security and intelligence cooperation between the two countries, after the visit of French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez to Algeria last February, a visit that was considered an initial indicator of a possible breakthrough in relations.
The diplomatic crisis between the two countries had escalated since the summer of 2024, following France’s announcement of its support for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco to resolve the conflictMoroccan SaharaBefore the differences later escalated with a number of political and diplomatic issues.
Observers believe that intensifying contacts between Paris and Algeria may pave the way for a gradual return to diplomatic communication channels, especially with reports about the possibility of the French ambassador returning to Algeria in the coming period.
