Today, Wednesday, Arab foreign ministers renewed their adherence to the Skhirat Political Agreement signed in 2015, as a frame of reference for a comprehensive political solution in Libya, stressing its support as a basic basis for resolving the Libyan crisis that has been ongoing for more than a decade.
This confirmation came duringThe 163rd session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level, held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League in Cairo, where the Council allocated a special item to discuss “developments in the situation in Libya.”
Support for the United Nations mission and emphasis on the political track
In the resolution issued by the session, the foreign ministers affirmed their full support forUnited Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL)Within the framework of its mandate established by the Security Council, in order to facilitate reaching a comprehensive political settlement that ends the state of division and puts the country on the path to stability.
The ministers stressed that any international or regional efforts to support Libya must start from the reference of the Skhirat Agreement, as it is the political document that has enjoyed local and international consensus since its signing under UN auspices in December 2015 in the Moroccan city of Skhirat.
Calls for dialogue and unification of institutions
The ministerial decision stressed the importance of continuing dialogue between the Libyan parties, and encouraging all initiatives aimed atUnifying Libyan institutionsAchieving a national consensus that leads to holding general elections in accordance with an agreed-upon legal and constitutional framework.
This unified Arab position comes at a time when the political process in Libya is still facing difficulties, due to the faltering electoral process and the multiplicity of international initiatives, in light of increasing calls to respect Libyan sovereignty and reject foreign interference.
