United States/Iran –Diplomatic efforts continue to contain the escalating tension between the United States and Iran, at a time when both sides continue to exchange military threats, amid growing fears that the region is sliding into a broader confrontation that may affect the security of the Gulf and international shipping traffic.
An American official confirmed that Washington is still committed to diplomatic solutions, pointing to the continuation of technical talks with Tehran regarding the nuclear file, despite the exchange of military strikes witnessed in recent days.
On the other hand, diplomatic sources revealed that a number of countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey, have intensified their contacts with American and Iranian officials with the aim of reducing tension and creating conditions for the resumption of a new round of negotiations between the two sides.
In this context, the Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, held a series of contacts with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the UAE, Iran and Turkey, reiterating Doha’s support for all initiatives aimed at containing the escalation and reaching a political settlement that enhances security and stability in the region.
This diplomatic movement comes after the United States launched new air strikes on targets inside Iran, after accusing Tehran of targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran responded by launching attacks targeting military sites linked to the American presence in the region, while warning of expanding the scope of the response in the event of repeated attacks.
According to American officials, Washington is currently adopting a strategy based on carrying out limited and intermittent military strikes, while keeping dialogue channels open and giving priority to the diplomatic track, while keeping military options ready if the situation develops.
On the other hand, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned against any new American military “adventure,” considering that the recent strikes represent a violation of the existing understandings between the two countries, and stressing that Tehran will continue to defend its interests and sovereignty.
In parallel, the Strait of Hormuz remains a key focus in the crisis, as Iran adheres to its positions regarding the management of navigation in the sea lane, while the United States confirms the continuation of its operations to ensure freedom of navigation and secure the passage of commercial ships and energy supplies.
Observers believe that the success of regional mediation efforts in the coming days will be a decisive factor in determining whether the crisis will move toward the resumption of negotiations, or toward a new round of military escalation that may have broad repercussions on the security and stability of the region.
