Algeria.. The arrest of 67 Moroccans as part of a clandestine immigration network brings the issue of immigrant protection back to the forefront

Algeria –The Algerian security authorities announced the thwarting of an attempt at irregular migration from the coast of Oran, which resulted in the arrest of 77 people, including 67 Moroccans who were candidates to migrate via sea routes.

An Algerian police report stated that a criminal network with an international reach specializing in organizing clandestine transit operations had been dismantled. The operation, carried out by the judicial police, resulted in the arrest of ten people suspected of involvement in organizing these activities, along with immigration candidates.

According to the same data, investigations made it possible to determine the network’s method of operation, which is based on gathering candidates and transporting them to starting points on the coasts, where a number of them were arrested in cars and buses on their way to a beach, before carrying out additional inspections that resulted in the arrest of the remaining suspects.

The operation also resulted in the seizure of sums of money in hard currency estimated at approximately 1,400 euros and 1,080 Moroccan dirhams, in addition to field equipment and ten vehicles suspected of being used within the network’s activities.

The detainees were presented before the competent prosecution, while investigations continue to determine the remaining possible extensions of this network.

In a related context, human rights demands are being raised for the need to protect Moroccan migrants in a vulnerable situation, in addition to the call to facilitate the return of the remains of Moroccans who died abroad to enable their families to bury them in conditions that preserve human dignity, while emphasizing the importance of keeping up with these cases humanely and legally.
