Mauritania –The Mauritanian military authorities began taking precautionary measures in the northern regions near the border, by calling on traditional prospectors to leave the exploration areas and return to the Mauritanian interior, in light of the escalation of security tension in the buffer zone south of the Moroccan Sahara.
This security move comes after the recent developments in the region, especially after the attacks that targeted the city of Smara, which raised the level of security and military alert in the border area.
According to circulated data, the Mauritanian authorities seek, through these measures, to protect civilians and prospectors from any potential dangers associated with the military tensions and armed movements experienced in some areas near the border strip.
These measures also come after repeated incidents of disappearances or casualties in border excavation areas during the past months, amid growing concerns about the repercussions of the security escalation on the safety of civilians.
On the other hand, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces continue to strengthen security surveillance along the security wall, while intensifying monitoring and tracking operations inside the buffer zone, in the context of raising readiness to confront any potential field developments.
Observers believe that the Mauritanian movements reflect the growing state of caution in the region, in light of repeated international calls for restraint and to avoid any escalation that might affect regional stability.
