A new attack on an artificial river station in Libya threatens water supplies for the third time

Tripoli –The Man-Made River Project Implementation and Management Authority in Libya announced that one of the stations on the eastern track of the Al-Hasawneh system – Al-Jafara Plain in the city of Zliten was subjected to a new attack, causing a water leak from the main transmission line operating at a pressure of approximately 16 bars, in what is the third incident targeting the station itself in recent years.

The agency explained, in a statement, that the attack targeted the 150 + 590 M/H station, after it was exposed to two similar incidents in January 2022 and November 2025, noting that the technical teams began intervening to control the leak and complete the necessary repairs, while continuing to work to maintain the continuity of water supply to the beneficiary cities.

The agency warned that repeated attacks on components of the Man-Made River Project represent a direct threat to water security in Libya, and may lead to disruptions in the water supply, as well as exposing maintenance teams to risks while carrying out repair work.

The Man-Made River Project is the largest groundwater transportation project in the world, as it relies on pumping fresh water from the deep aquifers in southern Libya, such as the Hasawna, Sarir and Tazerbu fields, towards the coastal cities, to provide drinking water for millions of residents, in addition to supporting agricultural activity through a wide network of pipes extending for thousands of kilometers.

Observers believe that the repeated targeting of the facilities of this vital project highlights the challenges facing the protection of strategic infrastructure in Libya, at a time when a large portion of the population depends on the waters of the Man-Made River as a main source of water supply, which makes any attack on its components have an impact that goes beyond technical damage to affect water security and basic services in the country.
