The display of a map of the Kingdom of Morocco without its southern provinces during a conference hosted by the Libyan capital, Tripoli, sparked political controversy, amid official Libyan positions expressing rejection of this behavior and considering it inconsistent with diplomatic norms.
In this context, Khaled Al-Nazari, a member of the Supreme Council of State in Libya, confirmed that presenting the map of Morocco in a truncated form during the activities of the Conference of Military Intelligence Leaders of the Sahel and Mediterranean Countries was not the result of an unintended error, but rather raised widespread astonishment within Libyan political circles.
The spokesman explained, according to media statements, that a number of members of the Supreme Council of State, especially within the National Accord Bloc, held a meeting devoted to studying this issue, where they expressed their denunciation of what happened, stressing their adherence to relations of mutual respect with the Kingdom of Morocco.
He pointed out that Morocco played important roles in supporting dialogue between the Libyan parties during previous stages, by hosting prominent political meetings, which makes such facts questionable within Libyan circles, as he put it.
The same data also indicated that a number of members of the Supreme Council of State expressed similar positions, considering that such actions do not necessarily reflect the positions of various Libyan institutions, and stressing the importance of maintaining bilateral relations between the two countries.
In the same context, it is expected that clarifying positions will be issued from within the Supreme Council of State regarding this incident, in addition to taking institutional steps to express the official position on this issue.
In parallel, social media platforms witnessed interaction from a number of Moroccans who expressed their astonishment at the incomplete display of the map of Morocco during an official conference, stressing the importance of respecting national constants and the historical relations between Morocco and Libya.
This controversy comes in a regional context characterized by the sensitivity of a number of issues related to bilateral relations and cooperation between countries in the region, which reinforces the importance of adhering to diplomatic norms and respecting the sovereignty of states.
