A 5.3 magnitude earthquake hits the Jabal Akhdar Coast region in Libya

The Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences announced yesterday, Sunday, that an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale had occurred in the Jabal Akhdar coast region in northeastern Libya.

The center explained in its statement that international seismic stations monitored the epicenter of this earthquake, which occurred at six in the morning Libya time, about 250 kilometers north of the city of Derna, and at a depth of 31 kilometers.

The center pointed out that the Jabal Akhdar Coast region is characterized by significant seismic activity due to its proximity to the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, which makes it vulnerable to continuous earthquakes.
