SportsThe celebrations of the Argentine national team players’ qualification for the 2026 World Cup final sparked widespread controversy, after a number of them raised a banner reading:“The Malvin Islands are Argentine”After the victory over England with a score of (2-1), in a message that brought back to the forefront the historical dispute between Argentina and Britain over sovereignty over the archipelago.
A number of Argentine national team players appeared, includingGiovanni Lo Celso and Lesandro Martinez,They carried the banner after the final whistle, in a scene that received widespread interaction on social media and sparked discussion about its compatibility with the regulations of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).
The issue of the Malvin Islands, known in Britain as the Falkland Islands, is one of the most sensitive issues in relations between the two countries, as Argentina and Britain fought a war in 1982 that ended with London regaining control of the archipelago, while Buenos Aires still asserts its claim to sovereignty over it.
The United Nations classifies the islands as non-self-governing territories, and calls for continuing negotiations between the two parties to reach a peaceful solution to the conflict.
The FIFA regulations and Laws of the Game issued by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) refer toProhibiting the display or uploading of messages of a political, religious or personal nature during matches or official celebrationsThis opens the door to the possibility of the incident being studied by the Disciplinary Committee.
FIFA has not yet issued any announcement regarding opening an investigation or taking disciplinary measures, while any potential penalties remain subject to the decision of the Disciplinary Committee if it is considered that the incident constitutes a violation of the organization’s regulations.
