Tunisia –On Thursday, Tunisian Interior Minister Khaled Al-Nouri and his Libyan counterpart, Imad Mustafa Trabelsi, discussed ways to enhance security cooperation and facilitate transit and passenger movement between the two countries, during a meeting hosted by the Libyan capital, Tripoli, according to a statement by the Tunisian Ministry of Interior.
During the discussions, the two sides stressed their keenness to develop security cooperation and improve coordination between the relevant departments, with a focus on facilitating the movement of people through border crossings and addressing issues of common interest.
The meeting comes in the context of Tunisian-Libyan movements to facilitate the movement of people and goods and enhance bilateral consultation, after Tunisian President Kais Saied stressed, during a phone call with the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, early last September, the importance of facilitating movement in both directions.
Tunisia and Libya are linked by land borders extending for about 500 kilometers, and they are united by two main crossing points: the Ras Jedir crossing, located near the city of Ben Guerdane in the Tunisian governorate of Medenine, and the Dhiba Wazen crossing, which constitute two important axes for passenger movement and trade exchange between the two countries.
The renewal of security coordination and interest in facilitating crossing reflects the importance of border cooperation between Tunisia and Libya, especially with regard to organizing the movement of passengers and enhancing communication between security services, while practical measures and the extent of their impact on the flow of movement remain linked to the joint arrangements that will be announced.
