Tunisia –Several Tunisian regions are witnessing a state of anger and resentment as electricity and water outages continue, coinciding with a record heat wave that has raised the demand for energy and water to unprecedented levels, causing disturbances that have affected daily life, commercial activities, and health services.
Citizens gathered in front of the headquarters of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company to file complaints about the damage to their property and electrical appliances, stressing that the repeated outages led to damage to household equipment and material losses, especially among shop owners.
The repercussions of the crisis extended to the health sector, as nursing workers complained about the impact of the power outage on the operation of some medical devices, especially those used to help patients who need oxygen devices, at a time when citizens criticized the lack of advance notice of the outage dates.
Nurseries and service institutions were also affected by the cessation of air conditioners amid high temperatures, while several areas recorded continuing disturbances in the supply of drinking water, especially in the governorates of Kef, Jendouba, Sousse, Monastir and Gafsa, where residents of some cities went out in protests to demand urgent solutions.
For its part, the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company explained that the significant increase in electricity consumption during peak periods, as a result of the extensive use of air conditioning devices, forced resorting to a programmed and temporary power cut in order to maintain the stability of the national grid and avoid a comprehensive power outage.
On the other hand, the Tunisian Observatory for Economic and Social Rights considered that the water crisis is not only linked to the scarcity of resources, but also reflects problems in managing the sector and the deterioration of distribution networks, calling for adopting a more transparent policy and ensuring that citizens are informed in advance of any interruptions.
Specialists believe that the aging of the infrastructure and the high rate of water loss within the distribution networks, in addition to the great pressure imposed by the heat wave, contributed to the deepening of the crisis, amid calls to accelerate the repair of networks and improve the management of water and energy resources to avoid the recurrence of these disturbances in the future.
