The United Nations warns of the danger of drug trafficking in Libya: a strategic threat that destabilizes security and the rule of law

I warnedUlrika Richardson, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Resident Coordinator inLibya, of the growing dangers of drug trafficking, considering that this phenomenon is no longer limited to its criminal dimension, but has turned into a strategic threat that undermines the rule of law, finances illegal actors, and contributes to destabilizing peace, stability, and the authority of the state, whether at the national or regional level.

These warnings came during an opening speech delivered by Richardson yesterday in the capitalTripoliOn the occasion of the launch of the reportUnited Nations Office on Drugs and CrimeFor the Middle East and North Africa region, under the titleDrug trafficking dynamics in Libya and North AfricaIn an event hosted byOffice of the Attorney General.

The UN official confirmed that the report comes in direct response to calls that have been in place for years, including those issued bySecurity Council, to prepare in-depth, evidence-based assessments of organized crime, explaining that analyzing drug trafficking as one of the most prominent criminal economies highlights the need for a more precise understanding of the interconnections existing between various illicit networks.

Richardson pointed out that the continued activity of these networks weakens national institutions and undermines sovereignty, which requires the adoption of coordinated responses based on respect for the rule of law, to confront the security and economic threats associated with organized crime and illicit trafficking.

At the conclusion of her speech, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General expressed her appreciation to the Office of the Attorney General in Libya for its leadership and partnership in hosting and launching the report, affirming in return the commitment ofUnited NationsIn Libya, we continue to support national efforts and strengthen legal and institutional responses to confront these challenges.
