The Polisario delegation in Nouakchott following a border incident…a context that raises more than one question mark

The President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, received yesterday, Monday, in the capital, Nouakchott, a delegation from the Polisario Front led by Hamma Salama, who is presented as the head of the so-called “Sahrawi Parliament,” in a meeting whose details were not revealed in detail.

According to a brief statement issued by a news agency affiliated with the Front, the meeting dealt with “cooperation relations and issues of common interest,” without providing additional clarifications about the nature of the issues raised or the outcome of the discussion.

This meeting comes in a regional context characterized by security sensitivity, but – according to available data – it is not linked to the ongoing consultations in Washington regarding the Sahara issue. It will also be held less than 48 hours after the Mauritanian army announced the interception of two vehicles and a truck that sources said belonged to members of the Polisario, after they entered the Mauritanian territorial field.

Identical data indicate that the atmosphere of tension between Nouakchott and the Front has not been completely resolved, at a time when sources spoke of Algerian mediation that contributed to arranging this presidential reception.

Hama Salama had visited Nouakchott on previous occasions in similar contexts. Among them is a visit last November that followed an incident of armed elements entering Mauritanian territory and an attempt to launch projectiles towards the Smara region, in addition to another visit in May 2025 after the Mauritanian army decided to close the border area in Lebrika, with the aim of preventing the movements of armed elements towards the areas east of the Moroccan defensive wall.

These developments reflect the continued complexity of security and political developments in the region, in light of Mauritania’s keenness to manage its regional balances according to an approach that declares its adherence to positive neutrality and avoidance of involvement in any escalation.
