In light of the escalating controversy over the issue of migrants in Libya, the Minister of Interior in the National Unity Government, Imad Trabelsi, confirmed that the number of irregular migrants in the country reached 4 million. In an expanded meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior, Trabelsi stressed that Libya will not bear the burdens of this file alone, noting that the deteriorating security and economic situation complicates dealing with the influx of migrants.
Trabelsi added that the continued uncontrolled flow of migrants may lead to a worsening of the security and social conditions not only in Libya, but in the region in general. He stressed that Libya will not be a region for the settlement of migrants, stressing the need to support the international community by strengthening the security of the southern border and combating smuggling networks.
On the other hand, the controversy was sparked by the statements of the head of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, who rejected the idea of settling migrants in Libya, calling for dealing with migrants according to the country’s current circumstances. On the other hand, the Prime Minister-designate of the House of Representatives, Osama Hammad, criticized Al-Dabaiba’s statements, stressing that these statements contradict the government’s positions, and that Libya does not allow any demographic change that threatens its sovereignty.
Hammad also strongly criticized the silence of the international community regarding this issue, warning against any moves that might threaten Libya’s security and stability, while a member of the House of Representatives, Jaballah Al-Shaibani, accused the Dabaiba government of trying to exploit the immigration file in understandings with the European Union to ensure its survival in power.
These developments come at a time when the issue of irregular migration in Libya is witnessing more international and local discussions, reflecting its political and humanitarian complexities in light of the current circumstances.
