Libya –The Libyan army announced, on Tuesday evening, its success in recovering soldiers who had been kidnapped during the attack that targeted the “Al-Tom” border crossing late last January, confirming their safe return to their military units.
An official statement explained that the operation was carried out after careful intelligence investigations and field tracking of the movements of armed elements active on the border strip with Niger, where the forces engaged in clashes at several concentration points, which resulted – according to the same source – in the neutralization of a number of militants and the arrest of others, in addition to the seizure of weapons, ammunition and military equipment.
The army confirmed that the intervention falls within a broader plan to enhance military deployment in the south, by intensifying ground and air patrols, and tightening surveillance on desert crossings and routes, in the context of confronting threats related to arms smuggling and the movements of extremist groups.
Extended borders and security challenges
“Al-Tom” crossing is located in a complex geographical area in southwestern Libya, where the borders intersect with Chad, Algeria, and Sudan, in addition to Niger, which makes the region vulnerable to security breaches due to the expansion of desert areas and the difficulty of controlling them on the ground.
This operation comes in the context of increased regional coordination, following the signing of a military protocol between Libya and Chad regulating border cooperation and the exchange of intelligence information, with the aim of filling security gaps and limiting any cross-border armed movements.
Read the developments
Observers of Libyan affairs believe that the success of the operation reflects a development in the field readiness of the army, but on the other hand, it highlights the continuing security challenges in the south, especially with the complexity of the regional scene and the overlapping crises in some neighboring countries.
Experts confirm that the sustainability of stability in this region depends on strengthening regional coordination and developing air and ground surveillance mechanisms, to ensure the protection of civilians and the security of vital installations and strategic borders.
