The coasts of Libya record a new tragic incident in the file of irregular migration

At the end of the week, ambulance teams and volunteers from the Libyan Red Crescent announced the recovery of seven bodies of irregular migrants on the beach of Qasr al-Akhyar, east of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, after sea water washed them to the coast.

According to available data, the relevant authorities were informed by local residents who found the bodies in various areas of the beach, before the relevant authorities began the recovery operations and transport of the victims. Preliminary information indicates that among the victims are women and children, while precise details have not yet been revealed regarding the circumstances of the incident or the number of possible missing persons.

Qasr al-Akhiar Beach is located approximately 70 kilometers east of Tripoli, and is considered one of the coasts that from time to time witness incidents related to attempts at irregular migration across the Mediterranean Sea.

Libya is classified as one of the main crossing points for migrants coming from sub-Saharan African countries, in addition to other nationalities from Asia and the Middle East, as many seek to reach European coasts via risky sea routes.

According to data from the International Organization for Migration, the Central Mediterranean route remains one of the routes with the highest recorded number of deaths and disappearances since the start of documenting this data in 2014, with hundreds of victims recorded annually.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights have also previously called for strengthening the protection of migrants within Libyan territory, stressing the need to respect international standards related to human rights.

The results of the expected official investigations will remain sufficient to determine the full circumstances of this incident, in light of the continuing challenges associated with the phenomenon of irregular migration in the region.
