Tunisia –The file of marine resources between Tunisia and Libya has returned to the spotlight again, in light of the growing debate about the exploitation of energy resources in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially after renewed talk about the Bouri field, one of the largest offshore oil fields in North Africa.
This file is considered one of the pending issues between the two countries for decades, after its legal path was decided by a decision issued by the International Court of Justice in 1982, granting Libya sovereignty over the continental shelf in question, thus ending a long path of maritime disputes that began during the 1970s of the last century.
The Bouri field occupies a strategic location off the Libyan coast, where it currently contributes a portion of the country’s oil production. It also contains important oil and gas reserves that have made it a constant focus of discussion about the future of energy cooperation in the region.
Interest is not limited to the Al-Buri field only, but also includes other marine areas and fields, including Bahr Al-Salam, Al-Jurf and Al-Zarat, in addition to the joint concession area managed by Joint Oil since the late 1980s.
Energy sector observers believe that the return of this file to the forefront is linked to Libyan plans to expand gas production in the coming years, in exchange for Tunisian interest in the possibility of developing joint projects to enhance energy resources and raise production.
Although international rulings resolved the legal aspects of the dispute years ago, the rapid developments in the energy market and the high demand for gas and oil are re-posing questions about the prospects for economic cooperation between the two countries in the adjacent maritime areas.
The file of joint offshore fields remains one of the most sensitive issues in the western Mediterranean, given its economic value and strategic dimensions, amid anticipation for the future of joint energy projects between Tripoli and Tunisia during the next stage.
