Tebboune confesses: Corruption has stained Algeria’s reputation… Are confessions sufficient to address accumulated crises?

Algeria –In an unprecedented acknowledgment of the extent of the damage caused by years of corruption, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune acknowledged that his country’s reputation had suffered a severe blow at the international level due to the financial abuses and money laundering operations that the country witnessed before 2019.

This statement comes at a time when Algeria is still facing increasing economic and social challenges, amid questions about the extent of the ability of the announced reforms to address the effects of decades of mismanagement and corruption that have extended to vital sectors.

Although the authorities celebrate Algeria’s exit from the gray list of the International Financial Action Task Force, observers believe that this decision does not automatically erase the negative image that has formed among many financial institutions and investors over the past years, nor does it eliminate the effects of the heavy files that shook state institutions and toppled dozens of officials, ministers, and businessmen.

Tebboune’s statements bring back to the forefront old questions about the true cost of corruption on the Algerian economy, especially in light of the continuing demands to improve the business climate, attract investments, develop public services, and create job opportunities for young people.

While the authorities confirm that the stage of systematic corruption has become a thing of the past, observers believe that the real challenge does not lie only in prosecuting those involved, but in building a transparent system capable of preventing the recurrence of practices that the Algerian president himself admitted had damaged the country’s reputation and affected its international standing.

Many consider that the head of state’s acknowledgment of the extent of the damage that befell Algeria represents an official acknowledgment that the years of corruption were not just isolated transgressions, but rather a deep crisis that affected the economy, the image of institutions, and the confidence of international partners.
