Algeria –Relations between Paris and Algeria returned to the sphere of political controversy, following strong statements made by the head of the Republican Party and former French Interior Minister Bruno Ritayo, in which he directly criticized the nature of governance in Algeria, considering that the continued tension reflects an “imbalance in political confidence.”
During his appearance on a media program broadcast by Europe 1 and CNEWS, Ritaio considered that the Algerian official discourse holds France responsible for internal crises, calling for a review of the legal framework regulating the stay of Algerians in France, most notably the 1968 agreements, with a proposal to link the granting of visas to the extent of the implementation of decisions to leave French territory.
These positions come in a delicate political context, as they coincided with official moves to revitalize communication channels between the two countries, following the visit made by the current French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez to Algeria, where he held discussions with government officials, and was also received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in a move that was considered an indication of a mutual desire to calm the atmosphere.
Observers believe that Ritayo’s statements reflect a trend within part of the French political class that calls for a more stringent approach in managing bilateral files, especially with regard to security cooperation and immigration, in exchange for an official trend that seeks to restore stability in relations after a period of diplomatic tension.
During the past two years, French-Algerian relations witnessed repeated political and media tensions, before recently witnessing signs of relative relief through the reactivation of security coordination mechanisms.
So far, there has been no official comment from the Algerian side regarding the recent statements, awaiting what the next phase of developments may bring at the level of relations between the two countries.
