Riyadh –The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation announced the killing of three people and the injury of 36 others, in two attacks targeting Abha and King Khalid International Airports in Riyadh on Tuesday and Wednesday, with material damage recorded, while the Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attacks, before the coalition forces announced the implementation of strikes targeting military sites belonging to the group in Yemen.
The authority explained that the attack on Abha Airport resulted in the killing of two residents of Moroccan and Algerian nationalities, and the injury of 28 people, while the attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh led to the death of a Sudanese resident and the injury of eight people, noting that all the injured were transferred to hospitals to receive treatment.
The Saudi authorities confirmed that emergency teams and competent authorities intervened immediately after the two attacks occurred, while damage assessment operations continue in coordination with security authorities, while taking the necessary measures to ensure the safety of travelers and workers and to protect the civil aviation system.
The Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attacks, and its military spokesman, Yahya Saree, said that King Khalid Airport was targeted with a ballistic missile and a number of drones, while Abha Airport and Khamis Mushait base were targeted with ballistic missiles and drones, according to what was reported by international media.
On the other hand, the coalition forces vowed to respond to the attacks, and their spokesman, Major General Turki al-Maliki, announced the implementation of a large military operation in Yemen. The coalition forces said they targeted 82 military targets belonging to the Houthis in the governorates of Saada, Hodeidah, Al-Jawf, and Ma’rib, including ballistic missile depots, command and control centers, and communications systems.
These developments coincided with an American security warning to US citizens in Saudi Arabia, as the US embassy called on citizens to be cautious in light of the declared threats against airports and airspace, warning of the possibility of canceling flights or closing airspace and causing travel disruptions.
At the regional level, the Gulf Cooperation Council condemned the attacks that targeted Abha and King Khalid airports, stressing that targeting civilian airports and endangering the lives of travelers and workers represents a dangerous escalation, and called for a firm international stance towards these attacks.
Egypt also expressed its condemnation of the two attacks, affirming its solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its rejection of what it described as attacks that threaten the security of the Kingdom and the stability of the region.
These attacks come in light of the escalation of confrontations between the Houthi group and Saudi-backed forces in Yemen, amid growing concerns about the repercussions of the escalation on the security of air and maritime navigation in the region.
