Omar Hilal: The royal vision for South-South cooperation embodies lasting solidarity with the countries of the Global South

Santa Marta –The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, confirmed that the strategy led by Morocco in the field of South-South cooperation, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, represents a “permanent act of solidarity” with the countries of the Global South, during an international meeting hosted by the Colombian city of Santa Marta.

The Moroccan official explained, during the opening of the expanded meeting of the Bureau of the United Nations High-level Committee for South-South Cooperation, which Morocco chairs, that the Kingdom continues its strong and sustainable commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation and triangular cooperation, as one of the basic components of Moroccan royal diplomacy.

Omar Hilal pointed out that Morocco has for years adopted a practical approach based on solidarity with African countries and the countries of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific, through projects and partnerships led by the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation, within the framework of supporting joint development and exchanging experiences.

The Moroccan Ambassador stressed the increasing importance of South-South cooperation in light of the current international challenges, especially with the approaching implementation of the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and in a global context characterized by growing geopolitical tensions, climate change, and a decline in public aid directed to development.

The same official also highlighted the transformations taking place in the global economy, explaining that trade exchanges between countries of the South now represent more than a third of global trade, with rapid growth recorded compared to traditional exchange between the North and the South.

In the same context, he pointed to the growing investments, financing flows, and exchange of technology and knowledge between the countries of the South, especially in the areas of climate, digital transformation, agriculture, and health, in a way that enhances the independence of these countries in charting their development paths.

This meeting, organized at the invitation of the Colombian Presidential Agency for Cooperation, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and the United Nations Development Programme, includes the participation of representatives of international regional groups, financial and development institutions, and actors from the private sector.

Participants will also discuss the “Global Alliance for South-South and Tripartite Cooperation” project, which is supervised by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, with the aim of enhancing international coordination and mobilizing resources and partnerships for the benefit of developing countries, according to their development priorities and needs.

Morocco, through its presence within international institutions and expanding its African and international partnerships, continues to consolidate its position as a regional actor in supporting solidarity cooperation and common development within the countries of the South.
