Algeria –The Algerian Ministry of Defense announced today, Saturday, that the death toll from an air force plane crash two days ago had risen to four, following the death of two additional soldiers from their injuries inside the military hospital in the capital, Algiers.
The Ministry reported, in a statement issued last Thursday, that a small military transport plane of the “BE 1900” type crashed immediately after taking off from the runway of the Boufarik air base, located about 30 kilometers south of the capital, noting that the plane had a crew of six on board.
The same source added that an investigation has been opened to determine the causes and circumstances of the accident.
In a later statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry of Defense clarified that two military personnel with the rank of officer from the crew died on Friday as a result of their injuries, bringing the number of victims of the accident to four.
Lieutenant General Saeed Chengriha, Chief of Staff of the Algerian Army, also visited the injured in the hospital, according to photos broadcast by official media.
This incident brings to mind an air disaster that occurred in April 2018, when an Algerian military plane crashed after taking off from the same air base in Boufarik, killing 257 people, most of them military personnel and their family members, in one of the worst air disasters in the country’s history.
