Nouakchott –The Mauritanian Journalists Syndicate shed light on what it described as “professional and ethical transgressions” that accompanied some digital platforms’ coverage of national competitions, criticizing the exploitation of children and publishing content it considered offensive to the dignity of the educational family, in practices it said were in conflict with the ethics of journalistic work.
In a statement issued by the Secretariat of Professional Ethics, the Syndicate praised the professional level adhered to by most public and private media outlets during coverage of the national exams, but it expressed its concern about the violations it recorded on some digital platforms.
The union confirmed that some coverage exploited the innocence of children and minors, and broadcast statements and content that offend public taste and detract from the status of teachers and professors, considering that striving to increase viewing rates and interaction on social media platforms does not justify abandoning professional principles or violating children’s rights.
The statement stressed that any media content that affects the dignity of the educational family or violates the rights of children is not consistent with the Charter of Professional Ethics, calling on media institutions to tighten editorial control over published materials before broadcasting them.
The Syndicate also urged journalists, photographers and content makers to adhere to professional and societal responsibility, respect the dignity of individuals and safeguard the rights of children, in a way that enhances public confidence in the media and maintains its professional mission.
