Nouakchott –The “Coalition of Private Mining Unions” in the Mauritanian state of Tiris Zemmour refuted the validity of the news that spoke of the targeting of Mauritanian prospectors in an operation carried out by a drone belonging to the Royal Armed Forces in the buffer zone east of the security wall in the Moroccan Sahara, considering that these data are “incorrect” and fall within attempts to spread misleading information about the incident.
The coalition confirmed, in an explanatory statement, that the bombing that targeted vehicles inside a disputed area was not related to Mauritanian prospectors, denying the validity of the stories that were circulated on some websites and social media platforms, which spoke of Mauritanian casualties in the incident.
The same source considered that promoting this news would cause confusion and offend Mauritanian prospectors, warning against attempts to exploit the incident to strain relations between Morocco and Mauritania, and demanding the necessity of investigation and accuracy before publishing data related to sensitive security events.
In the same context, Mohamed Hassan Al-Mahmoud Al-Alawi, President of the General Union of Mauritanian Prospectors, confirmed that the news that spoke of targeting Mauritanian prospectors is not based, according to his statement, on correct data, noting that the Mauritanian authorities had initiated procedures weeks ago to evacuate areas near the border, while granting successive deadlines for prospectors to leave those sites.
The spokesman explained that the region in question is witnessing special security conditions related to the ongoing conflict, adding that the mixing between civilians and armed elements has begun to pose challenges on the ground due to the use of similar vehicles and means of transportation.
These developments come in light of continued tension in the buffer zone, as the Royal Armed Forces continuously confirms its monitoring of movements that it describes as potential threats to the security of the region, at a time when calls continue for accuracy in the circulation of news related to the field situation east of the security wall.
