Nouakchott –The Mauritanian Ministry of the Interior announced the death of six children by drowning over the past few days in the states of Brakna and Hodh El Sharqi, in tragic incidents that brought to the fore the dangers of puddles, swamps and torrents caused by seasonal rains.
The Ministry explained, in an official statement, that four children drowned in the Aghsukrit area in the state of Brakna, while two other children died in the city of Tembadja in the state of Hodh El Sharqi.
The Ministry confirmed that, since the beginning of the rainy season, it has launched awareness and sensitization campaigns to alert citizens to the dangers of drowning resulting from rainfall, which leads to the filling of ponds and depressions and the flow of torrents in a number of areas.
The authorities called on citizens to adhere to preventive measures, most notably avoiding residence or engaging in any activity within valley streams and areas where floodwater collects, and not attempting to cross watercourses during floods, in addition to refraining from swimming in ponds and swamps.
The Ministry of Interior also issued a call to the residents of Nouakchott and Nouadhibou to avoid swimming in beaches that are not monitored or designated for swimming, stressing that respecting safety measures remains the most important way to limit the recurrence of such tragic accidents, especially with the continuation of the rainy season.
