موريتانيا تُفاجئ سوق الطاقة.. صادرات الغاز تقفز بـ1574% وتركيا ومصر في الصدارة

Mauritania surprises the energy market.. Gas exports jump by 1574%, and Turkey and Egypt are in the lead

Nouakchott – My Press

Mauritania’s exports of liquefied natural gas during the first quarter of 2026 recorded an unprecedented increase of 1,574%, equivalent to about 16 times compared to the same period in 2025, in an indication of the country’s rise as a new player in the global energy market.

According to a report issued by the Energy Research Unit, Mauritania’s exports amounted to about 703 thousand tons between January and March 2026, compared to only 42 thousand tons during the same period last year, which witnessed the beginning of the country’s entry into the export market.

Exports also recorded growth on a quarterly basis by more than 140 thousand tons compared to the last quarter of 2025, in which the volume of exports reached about 560 thousand tons.

A strategic project behind the boom

This increase is due to the joint “Torto Ahmeem” project with Senegal reaching its maximum capacity, amid expectations that Mauritania’s exports will exceed 3 million tons during the year 2026, with the possibility of reaching 10 million tons annually in the advanced stages of the project.

The project relies on a floating liquefaction unit with a capacity of up to 2.3 million tons annually, with gas extracted from depths of up to 2,850 meters below sea level, which strengthens Mauritania’s position as a reliable energy supplier.

Record monthly performance

Exports reached record levels during the first three months of the year, reaching:

  • 218 thousand tons in January
  • 232 thousand tons in February (+1006% annually)
  • 253 thousand tons in March (+1047%), the highest level on record
  • Türkiye and Egypt are at the forefront of importers

Türkiye topped the list of countries importing Mauritanian gas during the first quarter with 214 thousand tons, followed by Egypt with 152 thousand tons, then Italy with 108 thousand tons.

The list also included:

  • Unknown party: 76 thousand tons
  • Germany: 71 thousand tons
  • Spain: 60 thousand tons
  • Greece: 23 thousand tons

The month of February recorded the highest imports from Türkiye at about 98 thousand tons, while the peak of supplies to Egypt during the month of March was 76 thousand tons.

Shift in export map

Unlike the year 2025, in which China took over all Mauritanian exports, Beijing was absent from the list of importers during the first quarter of 2026, in exchange for a strong European presence.

Strategic bets

Mauritania’s geographical location on the Atlantic Ocean and its proximity to Europe enhance the attractiveness of its exports, especially in light of the geopolitical tensions affecting global supply chains, giving it a logistical advantage in the energy market.
