Nouakchott –
On Tuesday, June 6, 2017, Mauritania announced the severing of its diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar, in the context of the Gulf crisis that witnessed a number of Arab countries taking a similar decision.
According to what was reported by the Mauritanian News Agency, the decision came after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain announced, the previous day, that they were severing their relations with Qatar, while accusing it of supporting terrorism.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation explained that the Mauritanian government decided to end its diplomatic relations with Qatar, justifying this with what it described as policies linked to supporting extremist groups and contributing to the destabilization of a number of Arab countries.
In the same context, the Kingdom of Jordan announced on the same day that it was reducing the level of its diplomatic representation with Qatar, in a move that reflects the expanding regional tension related to this crisis.
This decision came as part of a series of measures taken by several Arab countries at the time, in the context of escalating political and diplomatic disputes in the region.
