Paris –French President Emmanuel Macron sent new political messages to Algeria, stressing that any normal return to relations between the two countries must be based on “mutual respect,” in light of the continuing diplomatic tension that has characterized French-Algerian relations during the past months.
Macron said, during a press conference held from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, that he hopes that the recent visit made by the Minister Delegate to the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, Alice Ruffaut, to Algeria will constitute “the beginning of the resumption of relations” between the two countries.
The French President stressed that France’s interest lies in maintaining “peaceful and constructive” relations with Algeria, but in return he stressed that this relationship should be built on the basis of mutual respect and finding practical solutions to the outstanding issues between the two parties.
Macron’s statements come after an official visit by the French official to Algeria, where she met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, during which a road map was agreed upon to strengthen bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of security and defense, after a severe diplomatic crisis that lasted for nearly two years.
Macron criticized what he described as “internal political positions” that, in his words, contributed to deepening the differences between Paris and Algeria, considering that the mutual escalation had harmed the interests of the two countries during the recent period.
The French President also called for adopting a “pragmatic and responsible” approach to addressing controversial issues, especially those related to immigration, security, economic cooperation, and regional issues.
Observers believe that Macron’s statements reflect continued French caution in dealing with the Algerian authorities, despite attempts to normalize bilateral relations after months of political and media tension between the two countries.
Algerian-French relations have witnessed escalating tension during the recent period due to historical, political and security files, in addition to issues related to immigration and regional cooperation.
