Libya is on a political hotbed… Tunisia is hosting decisive negotiations over the elections

Libya –The Tunisian capital, Tunisia, hosted a new round of Libyan political meetings, as part of efforts to revive the election file and end the state of deadlock that the political track has known for years.

These consultations bring together members of the “4+4” committee, which includes representatives of the National Unity Government and the General Command of the Libyan Army, under international auspices aimed at converging views on the laws regulating the upcoming elections.

The current discussions focus on a number of controversial points that have continued to impede the organization of electoral elections, most notably the conditions for running for presidential elections, the participation of military personnel and dual nationals, in addition to the nature of the powers associated with the institutions that the elections will produce.

This political move comes after the Libyan legislative institutions failed to reach a final consensus on the legal framework for the elections, which contributed to the continuation of the political division and the postponement of the electoral process that had been awaited for years.

Observers believe that the Tunisia round may represent an opportunity to reduce the gap of differences between the Libyan parties, especially in light of the increasing international pressure calling for ending the transitional phase and restoring political stability to the country.

Data related to the negotiations also indicate that there is a trend towards adopting gradual solutions to some of the outstanding issues, after recording relative progress during previous meetings held in the Italian capital, Rome, which led to preliminary understandings about restructuring the Council of the High Electoral Commission.

Despite the positive atmosphere accompanying these consultations, several issues described as “sensitive” still pose challenges to reaching a comprehensive agreement, especially with the continued divergence of political and military positions regarding the future of the Authority and the conditions for participation in the presidential elections.
