DeniedLibyan House of RepresentativesHe categorically confirmed the validity of the accusations that spoke of the launch of the attack that targeted a Russian gas tanker from Libyan territory, calling for the opening of an urgent international investigation to uncover the circumstances of the incident and determine the responsible party.
On March 3, the Russian tanker “Arctic Metagas” was exposed to explosions that caused a major fire to break out about 130 nautical miles north of the port of Sirte, which led to severe damage and the sinking of parts of it, while its crew of 30 members was rescued.
These developments come after statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in which he accused Ukraine of carrying out the attack via drone boats believed to have launched from the Libyan coast, according to what was reported by a Russian agency.
However, the Defense and National Security Committee of the Libyan House of Representatives stressed, in an official statement, the rejection of these allegations, stressing that any military or security activity within Libyan territorial waters without prior coordination is a clear violation of national sovereignty and international laws.
The committee considered that the accident was not limited to an environmental threat, but also represented a danger toLibyan National SecurityAnd the safety of international navigation in the Mediterranean, describing the attack as a “maritime terrorist act.”
It also called on the Libyan authorities to strengthen security measures to protect the coasts and vital installations, especially oil ones, while activating emergency plans in anticipation of any possible developments.
It called on the Libyan authorities to open an “urgent and transparent” investigation, in cooperation with competent international bodies, in order to determine the true source of the attack, away from unconfirmed accusations.
In a related context, the Ports Authority andMaritime transportationOn March 18, Libya warned of potential navigational and environmental risks resulting from the accident, calling on passing ships to exercise the utmost caution.
