Imprisonment sentences of up to 24 years in Tunisia against former political and security officials

On Thursday evening, the Tunisian Court of Appeal issued prison sentences in what is known in the media as the “deportation” case to hotbeds of tension, ranging from three to 24 years, and included former political and security officials.

The court ruled to imprison Ali Al-Arayedh, a leader in the Ennahda movement, head of government and former Minister of Interior, for a period of 24 years, after his initial sentence was 34 years. It also issued a ruling to imprison Abdel Karim Al-Obeidi, the former head of the aircraft protection squad at Tunis-Carthage International Airport, for a period of 22 years, after it was 26 years in the first stage of the litigation.

The ruling also included Saif al-Din al-Rayes, the former spokesman for Ansar al-Sharia, whose sentence was reduced from 24 years to three years.

The facts of the file go back to investigations launched in December 2021, regarding accusations of facilitating the departure of Tunisian fighters to Syria and Libya following the events of 2011, in the context of the unrest that the region witnessed at that time. The authorities estimate the number of those who have left the country to fight abroad since that date at about three thousand people, of whom about 800 have returned, a number of whom are subject to judicial prosecution or administrative control procedures.

Ali Al-Arayedh had held the positions of Minister of the Interior and then Prime Minister between 2011 and 2014. He repeatedly denied any involvement in facilitating the transfer of fighters, indicating in previous statements that he had issued a decision to classify “Ansar al-Sharia” as a terrorist organization in 2013, following the assassination of opponents Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi.

These rulings come within the framework of an ongoing judicial process related to terrorism files and recruitment and recruitment networks, amid differences in political and human rights positions regarding the issue and its repercussions.
