Human rights concerns about increasing restrictions on civil society in Tunisia

Tunisia –Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have warned of escalating pressures imposed on civil society organizations in Tunisia, considering that the Tunisian authorities have begun to adopt more stringent measures towards independent associations and organizations, including suspending activities, opening judicial prosecutions, and threatening to dissolve some human rights bodies.

The two organizations confirmed, in separate reports and statements, that the restrictions are no longer limited to specific associations, but rather include organizations active in the fields of human rights, immigration, combating racism, freedom of the media, monitoring elections, and fighting corruption.

The two human rights organizations considered that this trend represents a remarkable shift in the way the authorities deal with civil space, warning of its impact on freedom of organization and human rights work in Tunisia, which after 2011 was considered one of the most prominent democratic experiments in the region.

Amnesty International spoke of the growth of what it described as the use of judicial and administrative procedures to pressure associations, by freezing assets, suspending activities, and rejecting judicial appeals submitted by some affected organizations.

She also pointed out that human rights, media, and women’s associations have been subjected to campaigns of criticism and accusations related to foreign funding, considering that this climate threatens the independence of civil action and restricts freedom of expression and assembly.

For its part, Human Rights Watch considered that the suspension of the activities of prominent associations, including the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights, constitutes a worrying indicator about the future of human rights work in the country, especially since some of these bodies played essential roles during the democratic transition.

The organization also warned of the repercussions of these measures on the services provided by associations, especially legal support and legal accompaniment to vulnerable groups and victims of violations.

The two organizations called on the Tunisian authorities to respect freedom of association and ensure a legal environment that allows civil organizations to carry out their activities without restrictions or arbitrary restrictions.
