Paris –The French judicial authorities opened a terrorist investigation into an attempt to target Algerian dissident Hisham Abboud in the French city of Roubaix during February 2025, in a case that revived controversy over the conditions of Algerian dissidents residing abroad.
According to data reported by French media, an investigating judge specializing in terrorism cases decided to pursue four people suspected of being linked to a plan to commit a murder within the framework of a “criminal organization of a terrorist nature,” and to place them in pretrial detention pending the completion of investigations.
Hisham Abboud is considered one of the most prominent names opposed to the Algerian regime, as he previously worked within the Algerian intelligence services before turning into a journalist and political activist who has resided in France for years.
According to circulating data, the investigations were launched after data that emerged during research related to a robbery that occurred near the French city of Lyon, before the investigations led to what was described as a “plan to target Hisham Abboud” in the city of Roubaix.
Media sources also indicated that the suspects intended to carry out the operation in exchange for sums of money, but the plan was not implemented due to the absence of the person concerned in the targeted location at the time.
In his first interaction with the case, Hisham Abboud considered these developments “not surprising,” noting that he had previously been subjected, according to him, to attempts to target and threaten in recent years.
This case comes in the context of ongoing tension affecting the files of Algerian dissidents residing in Europe, especially after other cases that attracted the attention of the French and international media during the past months.
